Vale Findlay Wilson , artista plástica y profesora de danza contemporánea, nos habla de sus inspiraciones, primeros pasos y el cambio más significativo que tuvo, ser mamá.
Su relación con el arte y la danza ha sido desde que se encontraba en el vientre de su madre, quien es profesora de danza jazz. Desde muy pequeñita, ha demostrado habilidades en la danza, viendo a su madre dar clases y absorbiendo los conocimientos técnicos. También gracias a su padre, profesor de música, que la introdujo poco a poco en el dibujo: primero calcando sobre vidrio a los 3 años y luego dando espacio a su creatividad propia.
Ahora, ya con 32 años, cuenta con su propio estudio de danzas, obras de su autoría y proyectos en camino para abordar el diseño de indumentarias, todo de la mano de su amor por el arte.
Her relationship with art and dance began while she was still in her mother’s womb, as her mother is a jazz dance teacher. From a very young age, she demonstrated skills in dance by watching her mother teach and absorbing technical knowledge. She was also introduced to drawing by her father, a music teacher, who gradually encouraged her creativity—first by tracing on glass at the age of three and later allowing her to explore her own artistic expression. Now, at 32 years old, she runs her own dance studio, has created her own works, and is working on projects to design costumes, fueled by her love for art.
Primeros pasos e inspiraciones
Al venir de una familia de artistas, la conexión con la música, la creatividad y los procesos personales para llegar a una obra se ha manifestado desde muy pequeña.
Vale se recuerda a sí misma muchas veces abstraída de la realidad, envuelta en su propio mundo y en su creatividad, donde ese espacio le brindaba paz y conexión con su esencia más profunda.
Algo que sin duda destaca es su poder de observación. Este comenzó en sus largas tardes dentro del salón de danzas de su mamá, donde aprendió a utilizarlo como herramienta para crear y retener información.
En cuanto a los íconos en su vida, admite que no tiene muchos ni un fanatismo exagerado. En el área de la danza, destaca a figuras como Pina Bausch, y en cuanto al arte plástico, Nataša Kekanović resuena en su ser. De esta última, ha tomado inspiración para sus últimas creaciones relacionadas con lo femenino (sobre todo los rostros), las flores y la fusión de la abstracción.
Coming from a family of artists, Vale's connection to music, creativity, and the personal processes involved in creating a work have been evident since she was very young.
Vale often remembers herself as being absorbed in her own world, wrapped in her creativity, where that space provided her with peace and a connection to her deepest essence.
One thing that undoubtedly stands out is her power of observation. This began during her long afternoons spent in her mother's dance studio, and over time, she learned to harness it as a tool for creating and retaining information.
When it comes to the icons in her life, she admits that she doesn’t have many or doesn’t feel any exaggerated fandom. In the area of dance, she highlights figures like Pina Bausch, and concerning visual art, Nataša Kekanović resonates with her being. From the latter, she has drawn inspiration for her latest creations related to femininity (especially faces), flowers, and the fusion of abstraction.
En cuanto al arte y la moda
En 2024 se propuso dos grandes proyectos: expandir sus fronteras en el arte y volcar su creatividad en la moda. Para el primero, ha participado en ferias y eventos realizados en el estudio de danza donde trabaja, pero aún continúa buscando la manera de dar fuerza a esas obras para que salgan a la luz, por ejemplo, a través de un sitio web donde las personas puedan explorar sus piezas con total libertad.
Entre sus creaciones se encuentran los rostros femeninos, las flores, la abstracción absoluta y la delicadeza de las texturas. Más allá de los cuadros, pudo llevar adelante una obra de danzas contemporáneas experimentales el pasado 7 de diciembre de 2024, uno de sus proyectos más grandes.
Su siguiente paso es plasmar estos cuadros directamente en textiles. Ha comenzado a experimentar con remerones, pero en este momento está considerando la idea de asociarse a una marca y poder plasmar toda su creatividad en piezas existentes (como si de cápsulas se tratase) antes de comenzar de cero una marca que conlleva gastos y tiempos que, siendo artista y mamá a tiempo completo, no dispone. Desde su perspectiva: “Es un nicho que puede tener su potencial, porque muchas veces cuesta comprar la obra de arte en sí misma, pero tal vez llevarla puesta en una prenda de indumentaria es otra cosa, y siento que la gente, lo que es ropa, siempre está disponible a comprar. [...] Me parece muy auténtico; me gusta mucho pensar que quien elija vestirse de determinada manera es porque realmente resonó con esta pieza de arte”.
Regarding art and fashion
In 2024, two major projects were proposed: to expand its boundaries in art and channel its creativity into fashion. For the first, she has participated in fairs and events held at the dance studio where she works, but she is still working on how to give strength to these paintings so they can be brought to light, for example, through a website where people can explore her pieces with complete freedom.
Among her creations are female faces, flowers, absolute abstraction, and the delicacy of textures. Beyond the paintings, she was able to carry out a piece of experimental contemporary dance on December 7, one of her largest projects.
Her next step is to translate these paintings directly onto textiles. She has begun experimenting with oversized t-shirts but is currently considering the idea of partnering with a brand to incorporate all her creativity into existing pieces (as if they were capsules) before starting a brand from scratch, which entails costs and time that, as a full-time artist and mom, she does not have. From her perspective: "It’s a niche that has potential because many times it’s difficult to buy the artwork itself, but perhaps wearing it on a piece of clothing is another matter, and I feel that people are always willing to buy what is clothing. [...] I think it’s very authentic; I really like thinking that whoever chooses to dress in a certain way does so because they truly resonated with this piece of art."
Un impulso inevitable
La danza y el arte fue algo que le nació de adentro, algo que podía callar un ratito pero luego comenzaba a resonar de nuevo, más fuerte y más profundo. A través de su arte, hace terapia, ya que es un lugar donde se encuentra a sí misma, de charla con sus emociones. Un lugar donde puede ver sus piezas y siente que se mira desnuda, que se ve a cuerpo abierto con todo lo que la ha atravesado en el momento de creación.
En cuanto a la danza, comenzó dando clases para pagar sus estudios universitarios y con el tiempo, descubrió un lugar de conexión con sí misma y el resto.
Al enamorarse de la danza contemporánea, encontró un lugar de juego, experimentación e investigación del propio cuerpo. Su estudio de danzas da la bienvenida tanto a adolescentes como a adultos, pero ella ve y reconoce como el primer grupo quizá en cierto modo necesita más el espacio. Hoy en día con las redes sociales, el compararse continuamente con el otro y el tener un grado de insatisfacción sobre muchas cosas relacionadas a la corporalidad, Vale ha creado un espacio que permite justamente cubrir eso: Encontrarse y pertenecer, descubrirse a uno mismo, aceptarse, jugar, experimentar, abrir y dar lugar a la creatividad y valorar la autenticidad de cada uno.
An Inevitable Impulse
Dance and art were something that came from within for her, something she could silence for a little while but then it would start resonating again, louder and deeper. Through her art, Vale does therapy, as it is a place where she finds herself, conversing with her emotions. It is a space where she can see her pieces and feels that she is looking at herself naked, seeing herself laid bare with everything that has affected her during the creation process.
Regarding dance, she began teaching classes to pay for her university studies, and over time, she discovered a place of connection with herself and others.
In falling in love with contemporary dance, she found a space for play, experimentation, and exploration of her own body. Her dance studio welcomes both adolescents and adults, but she sees and recognizes that the younger group perhaps, in a certain way, needs the space more. Nowadays, with social media, the constant comparison with others and a degree of dissatisfaction regarding many aspects of physicality, Vale has created a space that specifically addresses this: to find oneself and belong, to discover oneself, to accept oneself, to play, to experiment, to open up and give room for creativity, and to value each person's authenticity.
Aún esta descubriendo el por venir del 2025, pero sin duda una de las ideas que recorre su mente es tener un equipo de trabajo. Si bien habla de la soledad como algo que le agrada, acepta y utiliza, también da cuenta que es un lugar muy sacrificado hacer obras plásticas, indumentaria y teatro sola.
Uno al encontrar el equipo de trabajo ideal, puede ponerse expectativas más altas o producir desde un lugar con mejores posibilidades.
Entre sus posibilidades, no descarta el ingresar a un estudio de moda, arte o rama creativa en una empresa, considerando que ha tenido experiencia en el área publicitaria, siempre y cuando pueda plasmar una pieza de arte auténtica.
Consejo para el artista interior
Si bien es muy trillado, pero el dedicarle todos los días a eso que apasiona, realmente hará un cambio. Habilitar esa posibilidad, empezar a mover algo interno, y transformar y abrir puertas, nos conecta mucho con aquello que nombra, <la esencia>, que es lo que nos hace auténticos, únicos y que el propósito que tenemos en la vida.
Ser, venir a hacer lo que somos y poder trascender a partir de eso que nos apasiona. Aquello que nos une, que nos hace sentir distinto o que nos hace sentir, básicamente, es el consejo que ella predica y practica diariamente.
Sin duda hay artistas que no sólo quieren crear y participar en propuestas, pero que realmente trabajan arduamente para lograrlo. Vale Findlay Wilson es una de ellas, camaleónica, fuerte y con un entusiasmo por la vida que resulta contagioso. Una artista que, desde antes de su nacimiento, estaba escrito en las estrellas que pertenecería a escenarios, galerías de arte y al cuerpo de las personas en la calle.
She is still discovering what lies ahead in 2025, but undoubtedly one of the ideas that occupies her mind is having a work team. While she speaks of solitude as something she enjoys, accepts, and utilizes, she also acknowledges that it is a very demanding environment to create visual art, clothing, and theater alone.
Once one finds the ideal work team, one can set higher expectations or produce from a place with better possibilities.
Among her options, she does not rule out joining a fashion, art, or creative studio in a company, considering her experience in the advertising field, as long as she can express an authentic piece of art.
Advice for the inner artist
Although it's a well-worn cliché, dedicating every day to what you are passionate about will truly make a difference. Enabling that possibility, starting to move something inside, and transforming and opening doors connects us deeply with what she refers to as <the essence>, which is what makes us authentic, unique, and gives us purpose in life.
To be, to come and do what we are, and to transcend based on that which we are passionate about. That which unites us, makes us feel different, or simply makes us feel, is the advice she preaches and practices daily.
Without a doubt, there are artists who not only want to create and participate in proposals but who truly work hard to achieve it. Vale Findlay Wilson is one of them—chameleonic, strong, and with a contagious enthusiasm for life. An artist who, even before her birth, it was written in the stars that she would belong to stages, art galleries, and the bodies of people on the street.
